An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a systematic process in which both negative and positive environmental impacts of a proposed development, consisting of the natural, social and economic aspects are thoroughly assessed and evaluated. It involves a technical evaluation that would lead to objective and decision making. The National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) requires that an EIA be carried out by an independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner for a wide range of identified activities.
